Used Engine Warranty Guide: What's Covered and What's Not
Share
Why the Warranty Is the Most Important Part of Any Used Engine Purchase
A used engine is a significant investment — often $1,500 to $4,000 before installation. Without a solid warranty, you're taking on all the risk yourself. A reputable supplier stands behind their engines with meaningful coverage. Here's what to look for — and what we offer.
What Our Warranty Covers
At Used Engine Expert, every unit includes a written warranty — three months on vehicles from model years 1991 to 2000, and six months on vehicles from 2001 and newer, with no mileage cap. Extended coverage of up to three years is available on request at the time of quote. Here's what's included:
- Internal engine components: Pistons, crankshaft, camshaft, connecting rods, bearings, and valvetrain components
- Engine block and cylinder head: Covered against cracks, warping, and manufacturing defects
- Oil seals and gaskets (factory-installed)
- Timing components (chain, gears, tensioners where internally lubricated)
What's Typically Not Covered
Understanding exclusions is just as important as knowing what's covered. Standard exclusions include:
- Labor costs: Installation and removal labor is not covered under the parts warranty
- External components: Sensors, alternators, starters, and accessories attached to the engine
- Damage from improper installation: Always use a qualified mechanic
- Damage from lack of maintenance: Running an engine without oil or coolant voids coverage
- Normal wear items: Spark plugs, belts, filters
- Overheating damage: If the engine overheats due to a cooling system issue in the vehicle
How to Keep Your Warranty Valid
To maintain your warranty coverage, follow these steps after installation:
- Use a licensed mechanic for installation and keep the invoice
- Change the oil immediately after installation with fresh oil and a new filter
- Check coolant levels before first start
- Break in the engine gently for the first 500 miles — avoid hard acceleration
- Keep maintenance records — oil changes every 5,000–7,500 miles
How to Make a Warranty Claim
If you experience an issue covered under warranty:
- Contact our customer support team with your order number and VIN
- Provide a diagnosis from a licensed mechanic describing the failure
- We'll review the claim and arrange for a replacement engine or resolution
Red Flags to Watch for When Comparing Warranties
Not all used engine warranties are equal. Watch out for:
- No written terms: If the coverage is only promised verbally and never put in writing, there is nothing to enforce when something goes wrong
- "As-is" sales: No warranty at all — walk away
- Vague language: If the warranty doesn't specify what's covered, assume it covers nothing
- No claims process: A legitimate warranty has a clear, documented claims procedure
